Background of the Study

Social media has become a powerful tool for political engagement, particularly in Nigeria, where it plays a significant role in informing the electorate, shaping political opinions, and mobilizing voters. In Bauchi LGA, Bauchi State, social media has had a notable impact on political discourse, participation, and mobilization (Nash & Garba, 2024). This study aims to explore the effects of social media on political engagement in Bauchi LGA, focusing on how it influences voter behavior, political campaigns, and civic activism.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While social media offers opportunities for political engagement, its impact on the political participation of citizens in Bauchi LGA is not well understood. This study will investigate the extent to which social media influences political participation, voter turnout, and the effectiveness of political campaigns in Bauchi LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of social media in political engagement in Bauchi LGA.

  2. To assess how social media influences voter behavior and political participation in Bauchi LGA.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of social media as a political tool in Bauchi LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does social media affect political engagement in Bauchi LGA?

  2. To what extent does social media influence voter behavior and political participation in Bauchi LGA?

  3. How effective is social media in mobilizing political campaigns in Bauchi LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Social media significantly influences political engagement in Bauchi LGA.

  2. Social media has a substantial effect on voter behavior and political participation in Bauchi LGA.

  3. Social media is an effective tool for mobilizing political campaigns in Bauchi LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding the role of social media in shaping political engagement in Northern Nigeria, providing insights into its potential for enhancing democratic participation. The findings will help inform strategies for political campaigns and voter mobilization using social media (Garba & Abdullahi, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the use of social media in political engagement in Bauchi LGA between 2015 and 2023. Limitations include challenges in measuring the true impact of social media on political engagement and the possibility of respondent bias in surveys.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Engagement: The participation of individuals in political processes, including voting, campaigning, and advocacy.

  • Social Media: Digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, used to disseminate political information and engage the public.

  • Voter Behavior: The actions and decisions made by individuals in the context of electoral processes, including how they choose candidates and their likelihood to vote.
